For the Birds Dir. by Miku Otagiri explores Inwood’s North Cove and its steward James Cataldi. The short documentary delves into the background of Cataldi and the cove while also bringing viewers up to date with the development looming on Inwood’s horizon. I had an opportunity to speak with James and visit the North Cove for my work in the neighborhood and the film captures the beauty of the reclaimed portions of the cove with stunning shots of the wildlife and waterfowl.
An official selection for the Social Justice Film Festival 2016, For the Birds isn’t shy about the struggle of citizen led environmental efforts and the toll it can take on an person’s health. The film is timely, not only for a Manhattan neighborhood on the verge of change, but for a country asking itself, “What difference can one person make?”
